QBCC Company & Nominee Licences
If you’re running a building or construction business through a company, partnership or trust, the entity itself needs a QBCC contractor licence to legally enter contracts, invoice clients and take on work. That’s separate from any individual licence you hold.
Every company licence needs a nominee attached to it, a licensed individual who takes personal responsibility for the technical standard and compliance of the work carried out under that licence. Whether you’re licensing your company, or you’re the one about to be nominated, the two go hand in hand and QBCC assesses them together.
Nominees aren’t a rubber stamp. QBCC holds you personally accountable for the work performed under the licence you’re attached to, and your individual licence has to be equivalent to the scope of work the company takes on.Â

QBCC Trade Contractor Licences
A Trade Contractor licence lets you contract directly with property owners, builders or developers in a specific trade, carpentry, tiling, roofing, drainage and dozens of other classes. Unlike an occupational licence, a trade licence lets you run the job yourself, and engage or supervise other licensed and unlicensed workers in that trade.
QBCC assesses your technical qualification against the specific trade class, not against the industry in general. Applying under the wrong class, or without the right evidence trail, is one of the most common reasons trade applications get bounced back.

QBCC Builder Licences
QBCC Builder licences, Low-Rise, Medium-Rise and Open, authorise you to take on projects of increasing scale across Queensland. Low-Rise covers houses, townhouses and small commercial jobs. Medium-Rise extends to projects up to three storeys. Open covers every building class, including high-rises and complex developments.
QBCC Builder Low-rise Licence
The foundation licence for houses, townhouses and small commercial projects. The step up from trade into running your own builds.
QBCC Builder Medium-rise Licence
Extends your authority to apartment blocks and medium-scale commercial buildings up to three storeys.
QBCC Builder Open Licence
The highest builder credential in Queensland, covering high-rise towers and major commercial developments.
QBCC Mutual Recognition Licences
If you hold an equivalent building licence in another Australian state or territory, or in New Zealand, you don’t need to start from scratch. Under mutual recognition law, QBCC could issue you a Queensland licence equivalent to the one you already hold, carrying over any conditions or restrictions attached to your existing licence.
The catch: QBCC will only match what your current licence actually covers. If your interstate licence is narrower than the Queensland class you actually want, mutual recognition alone won’t get you there, and misreading the equivalence is the single biggest delay point for interstate applicants.
